You can add 6 more Otos, as they don't take much space & do a great job with Algae.
Yes unfortunatly, Nerites are not cheap, but they'll do a great job with Algae.

Usually in May I remove all the heaters from my tanks & clean them well.

Is it possible to reduce the "light" hours of your tank, or the plants you have need "high light"?.

When they are young, they tend to eat alot of Algae but when they grow up, they start eating "normal" food & let the algae alone...... this is my experience with these Algae Eaters (Crossocheiuls siamensis).
Try to cut down on foods & see if the Crossocheiuls siamensis will start doing his job again.......
