Ok seems that they are not worth their money then.......

I have seen real nice yellow shelled snails. their body is white (they were in the same tank as the assasin snails). Has anyone got an idea what they are and whether they can be put into a planted aquarium?

I didn't say that they don't kill & eat the other "pest" snails, but that I never saw them doing so. Geeked

Usually, Yellow shelled snails are Apple Snails & usually most people don't keep them in planted tanks. If you have a picture, it would be easier to identify or else "google" search for Apple snails......

Yes I understood that you did not specify that you did not see them however I was looking for an alternative to clown loaches. I know for a fact that they will quickly and efficiently solve a snail proble (which thank God at the moment I dont have), however they tend to grow too large for my liking.

I was looking at something like prevention rather than later finding a cure Smile

Hi Nat, yes I checked on the web and it is an apple snail I saw. They are really nice! What a pity that they dont go into a planted tank, I would really like to have some in there!

I guess you are refering to the orange pigeon blood in the back of the pic....... You have good eyes cos the pic isnt even that good! But I see what you mean.

I also kept Apple Snails with Anubias without problems, but the Anubia plant is very hardy & it doesn't taste sweet, compaired with other plants.

Hi Mike , what we say is Apple snail is a ''bit" clumsy and with its moves will make a mess in a planted tank, have u check for Nerite snails-they have beautiful patterns and eat algae from plants and dif surfaces

I keep Nerites & Assassin snails in my planted tank without any problems. Apart from those, I also keep Amano shrimps & Otocinclus, so they'll also help with Algae eating.

    Re: Discus Tank

Thank you for your comments Martin.

Currently I do not intend to breed Discus. I am quite happy to give all my attention to this one tank for the moment. My biggest challenge - to get a really nice planted aquarium with beautiful discus, after that we see....

    Here are some updated pictures.....

    Re: Discus Tank

Hi Mike, can you send us an update of your planted discus tank - has been quite some time since we last talked. I assume it has matured nicely since March.

P.S. Had your Cobalt Blue discus recovered from the suspected Hole-in-the-Head?

    Regards Alan

I am sure that with your knowledge on plants, advice and all, his tank has matured nicely. By the way, would high temperatures like the ones we usually have in July and August harm in any way the plants ??

    Re: Discus Tank

Yes Martin, high temperatures will somehow damage aquatic plants in the medium (more than a few days) to long-term: at least they will stop growing, at most they'll die. Most plants thrive at maximum temperatures of 26-27 deg C, other hardy ones like Anubias can thrive in warmer waters. Fanning the surface will often help you manage water temperatures below 30degC unless you live in a top floor apartment and that could be enough. I had to invest in a chiller to keep my plants growing throughout summer (set at 27degC) but such an investment is NOT always necessary in a planted setup.
