    Brown Algae

In my second aquarium I am noticing a brownish sort of algae , is this normal ?? It is on the gravel , on the plants(plastic) and on the glass , everywhere !! I do frequent water changes (every 8 days aprox) and I do not overfeed them.  Can anyone help me pls , if neccesary I will post some pics

Do you have any live plants? Do you leave the aquarium with lights on for a long time? Keep in mind that certain food that you might use might have a lot of micro nutrients that contribute to the growth of algae. There is a good link by Dusko Bojic

No all plants are plastic , the lights are set to switch on from 14.30 till 21.30 (with a timer) and they have no direct sunlight of course.  Do you think you could give me that link ??

I think that the easiest way to eliminate Brown Algae, is to increase your lighting (add more watts per Litre), as i think that it's more lack of light.

You have to clean your gravel regularly & feed the fish a little less, or maybe skip a day or two, per week. You must also keep doing the water changes weekly & don't add direct water from the tap. Try to leave it in a container for a few days.

By increasing it you mean switch it on for more hours or increasing the light intensity ?!? . As for water changes I do it every 8 days

I will also check the link by antiam

     thanks

The problem could be filtration too. What filter are you using and what's the media inside it?

Increase the light intensity. If you switch on the current wattage for more hours, you can increase the Algae.

Even the filtration plays a part, but if it's a new tank, i will wait a bit & see if it clears on it's own by water changes & reduce the fish feedings, before taking more actions.

    Re: Brown Algae

In my opinion its a problem with filtration.

Increase the light! I think you would increase the problem.

Add live plants would surely help.

Water change every 8days, are you prepering the water before adding it?

I said to increase the light intensity & not the light.

Yes live plants will help Algae problems alot.

A small fish that is a very good algae eater is an Otocinclus.

That's a very cute fish , I will consider it as well apart from the apple snails . Yes Ernest I am preparing the water and also adding some de-chlorinator . J Theuma I have an internal filter by Eheim I will check the filter media

     Thanks for your suggestion

P.S - Corydoras Seracin do you happen to have the Otocinclus as well ?

I have 2 in my tank, but i don't think that anybody breeds them. So you have to buy them from Local Fish Shops. They are quite sensitive & take care to acclimate them slowly.

    Re: Brown Algae

Just to update you a bit , I did a huge water change today (about 40%) I think , cleaned the filter media with the water from the water change of course.  Cleaned all the plants , bogwood, rocks etc etc .  Scraped the glass with the magnet cleaner.  Looks better now of course.

However if problem persists I was thinking to add another internal filter and change the filter media , filling it with ceramics and charcoal

     Will keep you updated
