    Oscar fish

    Hi guys!

This is my first post so let me introduce.Im miguel and have been into this hobby for more than a year now.My first fish ever was an oscar fish.

They are very nice fish despite their messy nature. Some say that they are killers and will eat and beat anything in the tank. This is quite unfair because from my expirience this fish will not attack other fish that are to large for it to eat.It fights and liplocks with other oscars but is fairly safe with opther large chiclids(we are talking if they are in a big tank).

This is my oscar in his 60 gallon tank

    Keep it up guys!

Welcome to the Malta Aquarist Forum, Miguel & nice looking Oscar you've got there.

Some Oscar keepers say, that they hand feed their Oscars & they are quite tame as well. What are the other fish that you're keeping with the Oscar?.

Please treat Corydoras as community inhabitants & not as scavengers. Stick out tongue

    Re: Oscar fish

Right now there are two bala sharks with him and 2 black skirt tetras and a large pleco.I hand fed my oscar many times. He will eventually get used to it.I teached him how to jump for food too but that was a bad idea.Every time he used to see me he would jump and bump on the hood so i stoped feeding him from my hand. You need to tame oscars slowly .For him to be fed from my hand it took me 1 week.At first he will be afraid but then he will just wait for you to hand feed him. They are quite tame if given the right conditions and space

Welcome xelinu,Oscars are very nice (pets) the only thing i recomend is cleaning the filter and dont forget the water changes as they are good feederes and and all that goes in must comes out,so be as clean as possible with such fish.Happy fish keeping.

    Re: Oscar fish

A warm welcome comes from me as well Xelinu. Oscars are one of my favourite fish as well. I have kept them for many years now

and bred them some 4 years ago. From my experience I can say that the only trouble with an oscar is when other oscars are introduced

in the tank after yours had settled. As a cichlid, oscar is territorial too and the worst comes when these fish are not compatable either

with other oscars or with other large territorial cichlids. Not to mention if two oscars pair up preparing for breeding and there are other

fish in the same tank.........then  it is 3 rd world war !!!!!!!!. But surely if you keep your oscar alone in the tank without any serious

competition, I am sure you will find in him a very friendly pet for the many years to come. If you have any problems do not hesitate to contact us.

These are a pair which i used to breed 15 years ago, they used to take care a lot of the fry and i remember showing them and thier fry as breeding tank in the ex abc theater in Floriana. Those where the days,i managed to fill two 1mtr tanks with them.Note the different colors compared to todays import.

hey charlie thats my probem to once i breed the fish i start to lose interest in it, although i still find it beautful to look they will start to annoy me and i get rid of them, meaning i sell them or give them away no homicidal acts lol :)

It's not a problem. Fishkeepers differ from each other in many ways. First of all there are those who like keeping fish only. They buy them and see them grow and they are satisfied. Then there are the fishbreeders who go a step further with breeding their stock. For me this is more rewarding. I don't buy fish that can't be bred in captivity under normal aquarium conditions.

i only used to keep livebearers for about 5 years they were my main fish, know im into more so to say challenging fish like, meaning egg layers although the ones i am breeding right know are very easy to breed but still no fry will survive unless properly cared for
