    Re: Aphanius mento

Well, I was mainly looking for a Killi species, that is easy to keep & survive without much fuss. I know that the Aphanius mento is capable of doing so, but I wanted to know what other species are available.

Doesn't the idea of algae keep you off ? I left a plastic container in the yard to start a daphnia culture it turned green in 2 days , imagine a tank in summer ... Confused

T3ddy, was the tank you're talking about in the shade?. Usually direct sunlight will increase the algae, so it's better to keep outside tanks in the shade.

Yes I left it in the sun on purpose but I tought even a tank in shade would turn green outside but now I realise that was a bit stupid Embarrassed

    Re: Aphanius mento

My tanks have direct sunlight only from 4pm onwards.
The tank is still still full of hair algae, but I need it for the Aphanius mento to breed in this Spring.
I also use it to feed my crabs, crayfish and shrimps.

B.Sammut, these killies aren't difficult to breed. They will lay eggs in spawning mops or in my case in hair algae. These will hatch after 14 days according to the temperature, but thats the average hatching time. When I had them in my fishroom I used to pick the eggs from the spawning mops. But as I don't have time and they are kept outdoors, I leave everything natural. You'll know that they're breeding by the black colour of the male. In the morning you will see the male in full costume chasing the females in the hair algae. Then after a few weeks you can notice the small fry amongst the floating hair algae. I only feed crushed flakes, because in their you'll find mosquito larvae, bloodworms and for sure with all that algae tiny micro organisms.

I don't think that LFS import Killies, so the best bet will be a Killi breeder & from this forum I can suggest sending a PM to Charlon Ellul. I'm not sure if he have them or not, but he's into Killies like jtheuma. Big Smile

At the moment I don't have much, I can't see many of them. If I'll find a small pair I will try to catch them for you.

    Re: Aphanius mento

Jonathan keeps him on the roof, if I'm not mistaken & I know a guy who used to keep them on the roof all year round, without any problems. Another thing.... it would be better if you'll place the tank in the shadow of a wall or something, than in direct sunlight.

No I keep mine in the veranda with two hours of direct sunlight. But a friend of mine used to keep them in ponds on the roof, but these have to be a bit deep because the water gets very hot in Summer. Or else you can shade them with these green wind breakers you'll find at flower shops and ironmongers.
