As to answer Jazz's question I wished I had a few photos but I will explain the difference..
So I'm going to talk about this type of crayfish the Procombarus alleni..
1. The male has longer and thinner claws then the female.
2. Crayfish walk on four pairs of legs that are on its thorax. These legs, plus the pair of
claws, are called thoracic walking legs. In mature male crayfish,
there is a gonopore (a small opening through which gametes are
released to the outside of the body) at the base of the 5th pair of walking
legs. (The 5th pair of legs is at the are at the back. In a female crayfish, the gonopore is located at the base of the 3rd
pair of walking legs. The gonopores are a bit small and sometimes the same colour of the crayfish. They are like two spots. To see them you have to turn the crayfish in your hand.
