The plant looks like vallisneria but i think that the tank is quite high for the light to penetrate well. You also have another plant & i think it's an Anubias. Just make sure that the Rhizone is not burried in the gravel, or else it will melt & die. If you like, you can add some Ferns attached to some Drift/Bog wood. These are low light plants, like the Anubias is & will do well in these type of setups. Smile

I never myself kept discuss as space sort of never permitted. But about 2 months ago I purchased 4 from a local fishbreeder. They are doing fine up till today.

They are housed in a 4 foot tank with 2 fairly large Uaru chiclid a a few tetras. I have a couple of large bog wood in the tank and a couple of large plastic plants.

My question is : are the verical black lines that occassionally occure in discus really a sign of destress in the fish ????  if so, any one knows the reason why they act that way ???

Hi Martin, welcome to discus addictionBig Smile

Black bars can be a sign of stress bcz of bullying, water condition, bars can serve them as camoufluage to blend with a surrounding or a dark background, sometimes when in a breeding mood they display them as well or during feeding when fighting for a better piece. In the mean time few strains have permanent bars as a part of a pattern(Turquoise,Snakeskin, wild types)

i have to investigate which of the reasons you have mentioned are stressing the discus then. They are housed in a 200 lt tank

with 2 fairly large Uaru Cichlid and some peacfull tetras. The temperture may be the cause as it as lately dropped down to 25 deg.

Could this be the reason Nat ??

I will post a pic of it soon.

    Hey Martin

I keep my Discus in never less then 28C if lower-their imunity is very low, adjust the T while its not too  late, another thing as a general rule i keep only small tank mates with them like smallest tetras,corys,endlers..i tryed all kind of fish  but their robust movement stress discus a lot-its up to u what yr goals towards discus are, but if u r concern abt seing them happy and growing learn from my mistakes Smile

This is one of my discus :

as you can see the black bars are still very visable. I have removed the uaru and raised the temperature up. I'll wait for the results.
