    Re: Shrimps + discus

    HI there Mark.

I have a discus tank and  i have in it two big shrimps. The are more like small lobsters, but without any pinchers so cannot catch fish. They are called either mountain shrimp or rock Shrimp. They are docile and do not cause any trouble, in fact i have small tetras in it and do not worry them. The only thing is that they lead a very secretive life, and I have only seen them a couple of times since I have put them in the tank. So I know they are there but nothing else. They are quite big in size around i would say 5cm if not more,so they will certainly  will not be eaten by the discus. Having said that, if there is pleny of hiding space especially plants the amano shrimps wll survive. I do not have any yet, but I have seen a friend's planted tank and he had plenty of them in it.

Hope this helps you a bit

If you intend of having a planted tank, you can add a couple of Amano shrimps. As seracin told you these are one of the biggest shrimps found in local fish shops. They are found quite often but you'll have to check for them in lists posted here by lfs.

Hi Jon, well one of the biggest, but compared to the shrimps i mentioned, it is like a giant against a normal person. The shrimps i have are really huge. One of the local tropical fish shop had for sale.

If one adds these amano shrimps or the shrimps mentioned by Cikkus in the discuss tank, would they in any way eat plants ??

    Re: Shrimps + discus

     Hi martin

The shrimps i have mentioned i think are called rock shrimps. They are quite big around  2 inches if not more. However they are filter feeders. In the sense they have these two sort of arms and at the end they open up like an smal umbrella of fine hairs. They like to stay where there is a strong water flow. In fact mine stay  near the outlet of the filter. But i do not think they are algae eaters from what i have seen, so they will not help in controlling the algae, nor are they scavanagers.

But they are really beautiful to keep and watch, though sometimes can dissapear for days at a time

Martin, Amano Shrimps are very easy to keep & take care of. With plants, they do fine & only eat leftover foods & algae. They grow to a nice size & they I have kept mine for the past 3 years without any problems. Smile

I was wondering though if you get amano shrimps if they would  not be eaten by discus> I guess if it is well planted some my escape. But mine at all the neon tetras i have, so what chances do these shrimps which are smaller have
