As you know B.Sammut we frequently talk about our Jewel Chiclids. There are 2 classifications of these wonderful species. One being the Hemichromis bimaculatus ( green jewels ) and the Hemichromis lafillili ( red jewels ). Both species are magnificent animals and their colourations are fantastic specially in their breeding dresses. I have several of these chiclids and are housed together in a 4 foot tank. I have no idea why I have not acquired a pair yet and I haven't succeeded in breeding these fish yet. However, now our friend Charles gave me a few young specimens and will try to breed them in the future. Some articles on the net says that they are very easy to breed !!!!! well my luck then. Give them a piece of slate or a pot to deposit their eggs upon. Do not mix them with timid chiclids or other small fish as they can be quite a pest specially when breeding. They do not demand special requirements of water quality but having clean water is always a must. Keep us updated B.Sammut.

Well then I think thy are a bit too young to breed. Feed them well and take good care of them as they are quite nice specimens. Keep in contact. When you want you are welcome to come to my house and see mine.

Yes I now that they are too young to breed but I was curious about how they breed. I feed them three times daily and make 25% water change once a week. Thanks very much Martin and don't worry. When I have a chance I will visit them for sure.

That is very good for your fish friend. I do not have time to feed 3 times a day and do the water changes you are doing. Yours will surely grow bigger then  mine with that water management and feed procedures .Good luck friend and keep us updated.

At last I have a brood from these wonderful fish. The young are growing very rapidly and I am now feeding them crushed Tropical Flake food. The coloration is still faded but hope to see some red in the very near future. Their parents have intense red colours. I will post some photos soon.
