Activities Held by the Malta Aquarist Society:

San Anton Spring Fair

In Spring 2007 we were invited to take part in a show organised by the Malta Horticulture Society. This was held in San Anton gardens between the 5th and 6th May, where a lot of families visited this yearly event. Our setup was a planted aquarium with Asian fish, including Tiger barbs, Pearl danios and Black ruby barbs. The fish and plants used were all donated by members. Although we were not in the theme of flowers and plants, we had a good response from the public. Thanks goes to all those who gave a helping hand in bringing up this setup.

Visit to the San Lucian Aquaculture Centre

On the 7th of June 2006, which fell on a Wednesday, the Malta Aquarist Society organized an educational excursion at the Centre of Maritime Studies, which resides at the St. Lucian Tower in Marsaxlokk. This event was attended by approximately 40 members from the Malta Section and 20 members from the Gozo Section, the latter crossing by ferry purposely for this outing.

The members were welcomed by Mr. Raymond Caruana, whom we give our special thanks since without his collaboration this outing, which was well awaited by our members, would have never been made possible. He gave details about the different sections at the Centre, as well about the work involved to manage such a place. The members were able to closely observe the reproductions of the diverse ecosystems inhabited by the flora and fauna living in Maltese and Mediterranean waters. Mr. Caruana emphasized on the importance of having a national conscience as regards to the ecosystems in Maltese waters so as to be able to conserve them since they are very important to us and future generations. All our members, especially the younger ones, seemed very satisfied at having the opportunity to view fish which they had never seen beforehand, especially since they had observed the fish in their natural habitat.

In another section of the Centre, the members could observe the spawning and growth processes of the Seabream (Awrat), Dentex tumifrons, and Seabass (Spnott), Latex calcarifer. The adult fish together with the thousands of younger ones inhabiting stone troughs kept in perfect conditions produced an amazing sight. Also, Mr. Caruana resumed explaining about the work carried out on turtles which are brought into the Maritime Centre after being saved from a difficult situation. He said that after they complete their rehabilitation, they are let back into the sea. The members were also given the opportunity to observe a giant turtle which due to intervention by workers of the Centre, had resumed a normal life. Right: Octopus Specimen

At the end of the visit, the Malta Aquarist Society presented Mr. Caruana with a token as a way of thanking him for the help he gave in organizing this successful excursion. Below Picture

Launch of the TROPICAL Fish Food Products

For the first time in its history, our club has managed to import fish food through help from an appointed sub-committee. I am referring to the new brand TROPICAL, which provides a wide variety of Fish Foods. This food contains all properties necessary for our fish to thrive in our aquaria. It is available for small fish, fish which reach a relatively large size, those eating from the water surface and for others eating from the bottom of the aquarium. A product boasting of international reputation, whereas its high content protein and vitamins make it competitive with other well-known fish food. Left and Right: Variety of TROPICAL Products.

The Sunday meeting started with secretary Jonathan Ferris introducing us to the Polish company and provided us with some background information about the production of this product. He also gave details about the importation of this product.
Afterwards it was Charlie Grima’s turn to discuss the product itself. He was well-prepared on the subject since he had previously analyzed the products before their importation. Through this explanation the present members were able to understand the efficiency and reliability of this range of fish foods. Ultimately, Charlie Grima informed the members about the offer the club had put up for the day which was well received by the members.

Lastly, I cannot fail to mention the large amount of positive comments received about the positive change carried out at the club premises for this occasion. It is impressive how a few touches here and there can make a place look warmer. We could not bring such an occasion to a close without the offering of refreshments to celebrate this event. We were united as a family on that day.
