Kemmuna get together and BBQ

- The event is going to take place on Saturday the 4th of September 2010. ( evening ).

- Every one to use his own transport.

- Price includes ferry transport from Marfa to Kemmuna and back. BBQ and desert at Kemuna. Drinks not included.

- Closing date is Sunday the 29th August.

- Price is 17.00 euros for adults and 10.50 euros for children from 6 to 15 years.

Show poster 2010

The club is organising a poster competition for the 40^th anniversary annul show .This poster competition is open to all members and non members.

Rules

All work is to be original of the participant, copy right of photos have to be respected as the club will not be responsible for any abuses done by the participant.

The club 40^th anniversary emblem and M.C.H. emblem, Tropical and Nishikoi, are to be used; no alteration to such emblems is permitted.

A3 poster with high resolution is to be printed and hand over to Charles Grima (president) by not later than 17^th September 2010.

Judging will take place at the club by the committee. The committee is entitled to reject any participant at their own discretion.

A hamper of tropical fish food will be awarded to the best poster and a 10% discount on tropical fish food to all participants.

The following details have to be included in such poster, with the above.

Venue: Mount Carmel Hospital main hallDates: From 9^th October to 17^th October.Time: 8.00 am till 9.00 pm.Entrance: €1 Ticket will participate in a lottery of Aquarium complete with stand.

1st of May annual flower show 2010

On first and second May there was held at San Anton Gardens the Malta Horticulture Show. As in previous years the Malta Aquarist Society was once again asked to participate in this show. We had 7 tanks in all, some provided and sponsored by various local tropical fish shops, while another two tanks belonged to one of our members. The tanks ranged from the traditional tank, with an oak stand; to one very modern with a very modern stand underneath. Our stand attracted many people, especially on Sunday. This was my first time i was on our stand, and it is always great to meet new people who come over to ask you questions about the hobby. I am always amazed how many people there are who keep tropical fish as a hobby. This year we also had some a new product provided by one of our member. This consisted of a three D background for the fish tank. These backgrounds also attracted a lot of attention as they really give the tank a different look. But I think, the main highlight of our stand, was the marine aquarium, which was filled with clown fish and other small marine fish. It was such a joy to see the children looking at amazement and saying ‘Look Nemo, Nemo’. For me, watching these children looking so amazed and happy seeing the famous cartoon figure was surely the highlight of the time I spent together with Charles, Martin, Bertrand and Jaroslav on the stand. The main sponsors for the tanks were Aquahobbies, Akkwarjumalfa, Rain Forrest, Tarkus Water World and Mark Zammit.

At the end of the show we were presented with a cup by the organisers as a sign of thanks for participating in the show

As everybody knows we have transfered all our equipment from Deporres hall to our premisses and these need some sorting out.

5 a-side Football Game

The idea of making a 5 a-side football game came up, and we decided to see who's interested ... to check who's coming, and to agree on a date + time + venue.

The game will surely not be between 27th April to the 3rd May week, due to the preparation for the Spring Show @ San Anton Gardens. Most probably the game will be held the week after.

seminar between Malta Aquarist Society and Aquariummalta

Yesterday we where invited to a seminar organised by the aquaculture institute, chaired by Ray Caruana.

The meeting was very cordial and a lot of subjects where discussed ,how can we work together to enhance our hobby and let the Maltese and Gozitan members of the public to know of each other and learn more on our hobby.

The morning workshop was an interesting tour in the research section with a very good explanation on all the hatchery stages.

In the afternoon we where shown a documentary on the project of sea horse problems being encountered in the wild, which was very interesting.

The other discussions were how to improve our help to the aquarists, especially the new hobbyists.

I will keep you informed on future discussions.

Maybe the time has arrived....

As some of you may have heard, we came with an agreement with the authorities at Mount Carmel Hospital, to hire two rooms to use as a club and also storage area for the show's aquaria and stands.

So the next meeting 25th October, will take place at Mount Carmel ( at the back of the hall where the show was held). We're not having the usual meeting but to see the place, what are our plans, give your ideas and see how we can work it out. We will surely need some helping hands such as carpenters, electricians, plumbers etc...

I think that all of us want to have a decent place where to meet and we're trying to achieve this by the end of the year, so we have to do things a bit faster. So those interested can meet us at Mount Carmel at 9 am, so that we can sort things out. Hope to see a good number of you, because your ideas will help us for sure.

Annual Show Application form.

All those that need an application form to take part in this years Annual Show, must pick it up from the club in the evenings, at about 5-6pm till the 9th September from the club in St.Venera or else PM me, so I'll send you one.

The application forms must be returned at the club till the 9th September. If the club is closed, you can post it in the letter box.

The show is going to be held at Mt.Carmel Hospital from the 2nd till the 11th of October. All those that are going to participate & give a helping hand, must contact any committee member of PM me, so we can distribute the work evenly. The stands & tanks are going to be set up from the 9th till the 26th September. Display tanks are going to be set up on the 27th & 28th, while all fish must be benched on the 29th & 30th September.

Afterwards there will be the judging & on the 2nd October at 7.30pm, there will be the Official Opening of the 2009 Annual Tropical Fish Show.

San Anton President's Private Gardens

After an incident that happend some time ago during the last show we "The Malta Aquarist Society " had at San Anton Gardens that Charles Grima our president noticed that a fish was dead in the presidents private garden pond.Meeting were done with the President and his liason i which we proponed to the president that Our Club might take care of his pond.The President was very happy with our initiative and so we were appointed to do some maintinance jobs not only on this particular pond in which this fish was found but in two others.

First thing to be done was to clean the pond.This was emptied and after 3 weeks that it was refilled The Club introduced to the pond 42 Koi fish that were donated by Adrian's Puliesevich father.

4 members of the Club 3 which are comitee members were appointed to take care of the Pond.

A meeting was called by the president which took place at the Palace at Valletta in which the members that attended were treated as Ambassadors from an other country on a royal vist to Malta.In this meeting the president thatnked us for our jobs and asked about the health of the fish in which he tried to see on many occasions but becuse the pond's water had turned green and the Koi are rather shy fish they tend to hide in the lower leves of the pond thus they are hardle visble.So we suggested that we shall install a UV filter and pump in the first pond and when we shall see the results we shall complete in fitting the same sytem to the other ponds.

The UV filter is now installed in the first pond.The fish are very happy eating Tropical Premium Koi food supplied by our Club also.

I will try to post some photos of the ponds and system installed later.

EVENING TRIP TO KEMMUNA

The committee is working on another activity for it's members and their friends and families. This time, if we succeed, it will be a trip to the blue lagon to Kemmuna.The vessel will pick us from Mtarfa or Cirkewwa around 5.30pm to the Blue lagon. We will have some free time for swimming or a nice walk and afterwards have dinner served there. We will have music for the youngsters as well for some disco dance. The boat will take us back to Malta round about 11.30pm. Well we are still working on this event to get the best price possible and we will let you know in the near future. In the mean time start asking your friends and family if they like to join in. We do not have a date yet for this event but obviously will be around the end of July or something like that.

Logo Competition for the Society's 40th anniversary

The Malta Aquarist Society 40th Anniversary

For the 40th anniversary the Malta Aquarist Society decided that the members will design the logo for this. This will be used in next year's newsletter and also other souvenirs we'll be doing. The winner of this logo competition will have these souvenirs for free

Here you can find the rules for this competition and also a basic example done by Charles Grima of what is needed. The logos will be posted here later on. So if you have any questions and/or comments use the other thread ' Forum competitions'.

Rules for Logo Competition

1. The Emblem of the Malta Aquarist Society may be downloaded from the following link: http://www.maltaaquarist.com/Images/Background-Logos-Headers/MASLogo.png

2. All logos, queries or other must be sent to webmaster@maltaaquarist.com. This is the official email that will be used for the Competition.

3. All Entries will be put onto the Malta Aquarist Society Forum to be reviewed.

4. Entries must be in a high resolution image (lowest resolution must be of 1024X768pixels) and may be supplied in any standard imaging format.

5. All participants must submit a hard copy (A4 Size) of their work. The winner must present an editable soft copy (on CD/Pen drive) of his/her work.

6. The non-participating committee members of the Malta Aquarist Society will judge this competition.

7. This competition is open solely to members of the Malta Aquarist Society.

8. Each participant may provide up to 3 separate entries in the competition.

9. There must be a clear indication of the 40 years anniversary and 1970 – 2010.

10. The winning entry will be used in the Ilma Ċar newsletter and any other promotion or events that may seem fit for the committee of the Malta Aquarist Society.

11. This Competition will be open from 1^st June till the 30^th June 2009.

12. The Malta Aquarist Society will take ownership of all entries and may use them at their own discretion, once the competition is complete.

Black Moscow Guppy Auction.

During the next meeting, Charles Grima will be auctioning some of his Black Moscow Guppy's. All the money collected from this auction will be donated to "Dar tal-Providenza". So if you are interested in these fish, you can come & participate in the Auction, that will be run by Charles himself.

Just remember, that all this is done to raise money & help the "Dar tal-Providenza".
